Textbooks are not only the basis for teachers' classroom teaching, but also a tool for learners to learn Chinese. The intermediate stage is a significant linking stage of Chinese teaching and it is also a critical period for learners to improve their own skills. For this reason,it is necessary to conduct special research on the development of teaching materials for intermediate Chinese as a foreign language. In view of this, this article chooses New Concept Chinese(Intermediate)and HSK Standard Course 4 as the research objects. It mainly compares the two from five aspects: overall design, text, new words, grammar project, and exercises, analyzes their characteristics and shortcomings in writing from point to point, and puts forward specific suggestions for the compilation of textbooks. The main contents of this article are as follows:The first is the introduction, which gives an account of the origin of the topic, the object of the study, the current situation of the study and the research method, and reviews the current situation of the research on intermediate teaching materials for foreigners and the two sets of teaching materials respectively. The first part focuses on the comparison of the two sets of teaching materials in terms of their overall design. They all draw on the writing concept of second language teaching in the post-method era,and show a certain degree of innovation in the layout style. The second part focuses on the comparison of the two sets of teaching materials in terms of texts. The text format of HSK Standard Course 4 combining turn and short essays is more abundant. They both cover a wide range of topics, but their relevance needs to be improved. The third part focuses on the comparison of the two sets of textbooks from the aspect of new words. The constituent elements of their new words are different, and the arrangement of the new words is more reasonable. Both sets of textbooks include some super-class vocabulary, but their proportions are different. The fourth part focuses on the comparison of the two sets of textbooks in terms of grammar project. The number of language points in New Concept Chinese(Intermediate)is slightly less and needs to be further adjusted. Both sets of textbooks have a relatively large super-level rate of grammar project, but both have their own strengths in interpretation and it is worth learning from each other. The fifth part focuses on the comparison of the two sets of textbooks from the aspect of practice. There is a decreasing trend in the amount of practice between the fascicles of both sets of textbooks, but the amount of practice questions in HSK Standard Course 4 varies to a lesser extent. The textbooks are rich in types of exercises, but the communicative exercises in New Concept Chinese(Intermediate)pay more attention to.the cultivation of students' intercultural communicative competence and international vision. The sixth part focuses on the suggestions for the development of teaching materials The two sets of textbooks have their own characteristics, but there is room for improvement in the details. Finally, based on the results of a questionnaire survey of intermediate and advanced international students in four universities in Shandong,Jiangsu and Shanghai, some targeted suggestions for the compilation of textbooks are put forward.Such as enriching the text form, creating a real dialogue environment.Broaden the range of topics, balancing timeliness and practicality.Control the level of new words and grammar project, and appropriately increase Chinese interpretations.Enrich the volume and type of exercises, increase the fun and inspiration of exercises. The last part is the conclusion, which summarizes the whole paper and reflects on the shortcomings of the research.
