In teaching Chinese as a second language(TCSL),Chinese Reading Course is an important course aiming at developing students' reading skills and enlarging students' vocabulary.As a transitional stage,the intermediate reading stage plays an important role in improving students' linguistic competence and communicative ability.At the same time,Textbooks which functions as the important source of teaching decides whether classroom activities can be successfully organized.Therefore,the study of intermediate Chinese reading textbooks is of certain research value.Based on the principles of compiling textbooks for Chinese as a foreign language and the related theories of reading,a contrastive study is conducted to analyze the two books from four aspects,including overall structure,text selection,vocabulary and after-class exercises by using the method of comparative analysis,based on which corresponding suggestions are offered.There are five parts in this thesis,with the first part introducing the reasons,significance,research status,research methods and research contents of the topic,the second part focusing on relevant concepts and theories of reading and textbook compilation,the third part focusing on the contrastive analysis of the overall structure,text selection,vocabulary and after-class exercises of the two textbooks,the fourth part putting forward suggestions on the compilation of intermediate Chinese reading textbooks from four aspects and the last part summarizing major research findings,and the limitations of this research.The main findings of the research are summarized as follows:In overall structure,since neither of the books provide proper pictures or illustrations,it is suggested that attention should be paid to the use of color and illustrations in compiling textbooks to make them more interesting and attractive.In text selection,since each reading passage in Chinese Reading Course is long and the topic lacks variety,it is suggested that a total modification should be made to control the length of each text,expand the channels to select texts with more emphasis on global and practical topics.With regard to vocabulary,since the proportion of super-syllabus words in the two textbooks is too large and the difficulty of vocabulary is too big,it is suggested that the average number of new words in each lesson should be strictly controlled as well as the proportion of super-syllabus words.The note of new words should be made in simple Chinese rather than in English.In terms of exercise design,the Chinese Reading Course is not rich in types of exercises,so it is suggested to enrich the types of exercises and increase interestingness of each exercise designed.And if possible,preview exercises should be designed.It is hopeful that the research findings will provide some reference for the compilation of intermediate Chinese textbooks.
