As a western theory of social work, the application of structural family therapy in The Context of Chinese culture will inevitably face the problem of compatibility. In other words, structural family therapy has certain compatibility with Chinese culture, but it also faces some localized difficulties.Through case analysis and comparative study, this paper sorted out the connotation of family culture based on 10 cases and compared it with structured family therapy to discuss the compatibility between them. The connotation of family culture is discussed from two aspects: family culture as a whole and family culture as an individual. As a whole, family culture refers to the holistic view of the family, advocating family orientation, paying attention to family harmony and continuity, the obligation of mutual assistance between family members,as well as family rules, family traditions as well as other family norms.Family culture as an individual refers to the ethical relationship between family members, including father-son relationship,husband-wife relationship as well as brothers-sister relationship.Furthermore, this paper discusses the compatibility between structural family therapy and family culture. From the perspective of family culture as a whole, both structured family therapy and traditional family culture pay attention to the harmony within the family. The family-oriented thought helps to promote the participation of all family members in structured family therapy.Norms such as family rules and family instructions help to clarify the boundaries between family subsystems and maintain the elasticity between each subsystem. The mutual assistance between family members is conducive to strengthening the support of family members, and can also bring the neighborhood and community into the family support system and expand the family support network. From the perspective of individual family, parental authority helps to keep the subsystem of parents from being invaded by children, and the requirement of filial piety also helps to make children respect parental authority. The educational division of parents is consistent with the connotation of parent-child subsystem, which is convenient for social workers to intervene.Keeping the modesty and fraternity between siblings is helpful to promote the independent development of siblings subsystem. In addition, the role of parents in setting good examples for their children’s growth. Finally, this paper also discusses the structural family therapy in the Context of Chinese culture, which mainly includes: Chinese families put too much emphasis on the inner core of the family so as to hide family conflicts, increase the difficulty for social work to explore the family structure, attach too much importance to the continuation of the family and result in the idea of favoring boys over girls, ignore the status of girls in the family, and the family-oriented thought erodes the independence of individuals. The father always plays a strict role in the family, resulting in rigid boundaries between father and son(daughter),while the mother and child are too close to each other, resulting in the establishment of an alliance between mother and son(daughter)excluding the father. The estrangement culture between husband as well as wife makes it cooperation difficultly, resulting in estrangement between husband and wife.In view of the above situation, this paper raises some proposals, mainly including the following aspects to figure out the problem: First, the role of traditional Chinese family culture can be brought into play, which mainly includes: establishing family norms, emphasizing family unity and members’ roles and obligations, expanding the support network of patients with symptoms.Secondly, from the methodology, social workers can overcome cultural barriers through localized intervention procedures, respect for parental authority and attention to symptoms. Finally,in terms of the role of social workers, social workers should abide by professional ethics, maintain cultural sensitivity, and promote the theory and technology of structured family therapy to be more appropriate to China’s reality in two ways: intimate position or expert attitude. |
