The situational approach is a kind of teaching mode in which teachers create typical situations to make abstract language forms into vivid,concrete and visual language,so as to encourage students to actively participate in the teaching process.Its main features are to stimulate students’ interest in learning,give play to their autonomy,and experience emotions,with the practicality running through the whole process and paying attention to development.From the current situation,we can see that there are several problems in the teaching of English reading in primary schools: The design of situational reading activities is rigid,and students’ interest is not strong;The creation of reading situation does not fit the students’ reality,which is separated from the subject of students;The materials of situational reading is not in line with the actual situation,and the cultivation of students’ reading ability is not comprehensive.This paper mainly uses the method of literature research and investigation research to investigate the current situation of the use of situational approach in primary school English reading teaching by teachers of Kunshan Bao Qiao primary school,and focuses on the problems found in the survey and put forward the corresponding improvement strategies.This paper is divided into four parts.The first part is the introduction,which mainly elaborates the basis of topic selection,literature review,research methods and related theories of this paper.The second part is the survey of the current situation of situational approach in primary school English reading teaching,which mainly elaborates the scheme design and the investigation result of this survey.The third part is the problems existing in the teaching of English reading in primary schools,which mainly analyzes the interest of situational approach activities,methods of situational approach,forms of group cooperation,teaching evaluation and other aspects in detail.The fourth part analyzes the causes of the problems in English reading teaching in primary schools,which seeks relevant reasons from the following aspects: situational approach has a great influence on students’ performance,students’ reading level varies greatly,schools are under great pressure to take examinations,and teachers’ ability to guide situational reading is uneven,etc.The fifth part is the improvement strategy of situational approach in primary school English reading teaching,which mainly puts forward some suggestions from four aspects: the creation of language situation,the application of teaching resources,the organization of group cooperation,and the effective implementation of teaching evaluation.It is hoped that the result of this study can arouse the attention of the academic circle,effectively avoid common mistakes in teaching when adopting situational approach by English teachers in primary schools,and provide some references for the front-line teachers to use situational approach in English reading teaching in primary schools.At the same time,it is hoped to promote the formation of primary school students’ core quality of English and improve their comprehensive English ability.
