Grammar, as the internal discipline of language, plays an important role in improving language skills. In China, English teaching lays much emphasis on the teaching of grammar rules but ignores the cultivation of students'communicative ability. In recent years, Communicative Approach, whose main aim is to develop students' communicative competence rather than grammar learning, is a major method in foreign language teaching in China. Although some teachers have realized the importance of grammar teaching in practice, they do not know with which grammar teaching method they can combine grammar teaching with the improvement of students'communicative competence. In order to improve the present grammar teaching situation in senior high schools, the research in this thesis explores a method of teaching English grammar based on Situational Teaching Approach.Applying or creating situations has always been an important way in foreign language teaching and different linguists have their own understanding of "Situation" Teaching Approach is developed by British language teaching specialists between 1920s and 1960s. It is a language teaching method focusing on the creating of effective situations where new teaching points are presented and practised.The thesis starts with the explanation of grammar in two different views. Then the thesis points out grammar teaching principles and some grammar teaching models. Also, the thesis analyses the concepts of Situation and Situational Teaching Approach, the theoretical guidance and the teaching principles of Situational Teaching Approach. Ways of creating situations in teaching are also listed. Furthermore, the thesis presents the experiment on applying Situational Teaching Approach to English grammar teaching in Suizhou No.1 Senior High School from Sept.2010 to Jan.2011.The focus of the thesis is on the situational teaching model in English grammar teaching promoted by the writer as well as one of the writer's teaching plan, through which readers can know how to teach English grammar using Situational Teaching Approach. The questionnaire and the experimental data show that the situation-based grammar teaching method is obviously better and more effective than traditional grammar teaching method in cultivating students' interest and enhancing their confidence in learning English grammar. In the end, some suggestions are given with the hope of being beneficial to English teachers who want to improve English teaching and those who mean to do some related research in senior high schools. |
