The translation practice report selects some contents of the technical paper A Critical Review on the Production and Application of Graphene and Graphene-based Materials in Anti-corrosion Coatings.The source text describes the production and application of graphene and graphene-based materials in anti-corrosive coatings,involving an interdisciplinary field of research combining materials,chemistry,and physics.The selected paper is a typical scientific text with a sea of precise and accurate words,professional terms,and a large number of complex sentences.The translator probes into the strategies that can be used to deal with some translation problems under the guidance of the three rules of skopos theory.The translation steps are as follows: firstly,scope out the text to be translated;secondly,use computer-assisted translation;then,make appropriate changes based on an understanding of the source text;next,enhance translation with fidelity and fluency;and finally,polish the translation.In this process,the translator has solved some difficult problems in the translation of this scientific text.At the lexical level,problems such as polysomy of common words,the mistranslation of abbreviations,and rigid structure of verb-nominalization can be solved by strategies of lexical selection,non-translation of abbreviations,and lexical conversion.At the syntactic level,the obscure and complex sentences can be solved by means of sequential translation,restructuring and splitting.At the discourse level,to achieve coherence and fidelity in the translation,it is necessary to understand the logical relationship between the preceding and following statements of the source text and the role of connecting words and be guided by the skopos theory to achieve an accurate translation of the discourse.This translation practice report mainly includes five charters,namely,introduction of the translation task description,translation process,theoretical basis of skopos theory,case analysis,and conclusion.The first part briefly introduces the translation background,the significance of the study,and a brief description of the translation task.The second part introduces the translation preparation,translation schedule,and posttranslation editing and revision.The third part elaborates on skopos theory,sets out its guiding significance,and identifies skopos theory as the main guide.The fourth part is case studies,with case analysis at three levels: vocabulary,sentence,and discourse.The fifth part concludes this translation practice.
