English,an important communication tool for international exchanges and cooperation in today’s world,carries profound ideas and culture.Learning and using English plays a significant role in studying advanced science technology and ideas worldwide,disseminating Chinese culture,and enhancing mutual understanding and cooperation between China and the world.China,a country where almost everyone learns English,has been on the long road of exploring English language teaching.For purpose of learning and using English,the general senior high school English course has also been highly attached importance to from all walks of life.Currently,the long-term goal of high school English learning is to enhance students’ lifelong development and lay a solid foundation for their further study.According to the New English Curriculum Standard(2020),the comprehensive cultivation of students’ language ability,cultural awareness,thinking ability and learning ability is highly emphasized,which aims to help students further use basic English knowledge and skills so that they could absorb the essence of world culture,spread Chinese culture.Most importantly,create for themselves with more opportunities in further study and career choice in the future.Reading is one of significantly important approaches of language input.For English learner,Extensive reading plays the same role in improving reading ability.Thus,this thesis mainly focus on the application of English extracurricular reading styles to the development of reading ability of senior high school students.Through conducting a survey on the current situation of English extracurricular reading among the students in the second grade science class in the author’s school,the basic situation of students’ English extracurricular reading and the main problems they are facing are clarified,and then the specific reasons are analyzed,on the basis of which an eight-month extracurricular reading experiment was respectively implemented in two classes.Combined with the goals of the New College Entrance Examination and the New English curriculum Standard,the students in experimental class conducted a large amount of extra-curricular reading in their spare time under the strict guidance and supervision of the teacher,while the students in paired class conducted independent English extra-curricular reading.After the experiment,through the comparative analysis of students’ reading test scores before and after the experiment,questionnaires and student interviews,this research mainly explore whether different extracurricular reading styles can significantly improve students’ reading ability? How do reading styles affect the improvement of students’ reading ability?How to effectively carry out extracurricular reading in the future to promote students’ reading ability?Combined with the case analysis of the specific extra-curricular reading guidance mode and the test results before and after the experiment,a comprehensive analysis to the results of questionnaires and interview of students and teachers before and after the experiment is conducted and the following conclusions are drawn.These two different extracurricular reading styles can improve students’ reading ability,but the effect of teacher-guided reading is more obvious;Students’ autonomous extracurricular reading can effectively stimulate students’ internal drive to read and promote students to form long-lasting reading interest and habits;The selection of reading materials,the hierarchical and classified guidance of extracurricular reading and the cultivation of students’ extracurricular reading habits are the main breakthroughs for students to develop reading ability in the future. |
