English reading ability is the basis for the development of English learners’ other language ability.To learn English well,it is necessary to improve English reading ability.For a long time,how to improve students’ reading ability has been the focus of English reading teaching in China,teachers and students have invested a lot of time and energy in reading,but there are still various factors that restrict the improvement of high school students’ English reading ability.Therefore,it is urgent to solve the problem of how to improve senior high school students’ English reading ability.This study investigates the English reading ability of 269 senior high school students from three senior high schools in Anshan by questionnaire,English reading comprehension test paper and interview.Three research questions are presented in the thesis:1.What is the profile of senior high school students’ English reading in Anshan?2.Are there significant differences in English reading ability among students of different schools and genders?3.What are the main factors that affect English reading proficiency of senior high school students in Anshan?Based on Descriptive Analysis,Variance Analysis,Independent Sample T-test,Correlation Analysis,and Multiple Regression Analysis,the following findings are obtained:1.At present,the profile of senior high school students’ English reading in Anshan is not optimistic,senior high school students’ English reading comprehension and reading fluency are all below the medium level;Senior high school students are less interested in English reading,and most students have not formed good reading habits;2.There are significant differences in English reading ability among students from different schools,and the English reading ability of key senior high school students is significantly better than that of ordinary senior high school students;There is no significant difference in English reading ability between boys and girls,but girls’ reading fluency is significantly better than boys’ when reading aloud;3.Senior High school students’ English reading strategies,reading fluency,reading habits and attitudes have a significant impact on English reading proficiency,and can predict English reading performance to a certain extent.Combined with the above findings,the author puts forward some targeted suggestions on how to improve the English reading ability of senior high school students from the perspective of teachers and students,which is a reference for teachers and students.
