Abstract/Summary:
Listening,speaking,reading and writing are the components of basic English learning skills.As a matter of fact,reading is an input skill that can improve students’ listening and writing abilities.English learning needs a lot of input.Unfortunately,most classroom reading can’t provide enough time and materials for students,and their reading ability is difficult to be improved.As an important supplement to in-class reading,extracurricular is often used to help improve students’ reading ability.Therefore,the role of extracurricular reading in English learning has become increasingly prominent and has become an important aspect of English learning to improve students’ academic performance.According to Hu Chundong,there are four aspects of reading ability: reading language ability,reading talent,reading intelligence and reading skills in his book English Reading Theory.This paper focuses on the reading language ability and reading intelligence in English reading ability.Reading language ability refers to a one’s ability to recognize words,understand grammar and text structures,that is,the ability to apply grammar.Reading intelligence refers to a one’s ability of generalization and reasoning.Reading language corresponds to students’ grammatical application ability,while reading intelligence corresponds to students’ generalization and induction ability and reasoning and judgment ability.In this paper,English reading ability is defined as three aspects: grammar application ability;Generalization and induction ability;Reasoning and judgment ability.Therefore,this paper investigates the following contents 1.The current situation of English extracurricular reading of students in the senior high school.2.What are the effects of English extracurricular reading on students’ reading ability including grammar application ability,generalization and induction ability and reasoning and judgment ability? 3.What are the effects of English extracurricular reading on reading ability of students with different levels?By analyzing the experimental data,the following results are concluded: 1)The current situation of senior high school students’ reading after class are not very pleasant.Many of them understand the significance of extracurricular reading.However,during the process,they have met many difficulties and this may be the reason that they are unable to carry out after class reading.At last,many students are not able to use reading strategies to solve problems.2)After the students’ extracurricular reading,their reading ability is improved significantly,especially their grammar application ability.3)After the experiment,according to the data analysis,the low-level students’ reading ability is improved more significantly.Therefore,this study aims to promote the relevant research of English extracurricular reading and to give some useful ideas for the implementation and teaching of English extracurricular reading.
