A Study On The Effect Of Extracurricular Reading Style To English Reading Literacy Of Grade One Students In Senior High School

Abstract/Summary:
The cultivation and improvement of reading ability is closely related to the all-round development of students’ comprehensive quality.In recent years,the traditional concept of“reading ability” is gradually giving its way to the new concept of “reading literacy”.Domestic educational scholars led by Wang Qiang put forward the Framework of English Reading Literacy for Primary and Middle School Students in China,which not just covers the elements related to the traditional reading ability,but also emphasizes on elements under the reading character like students’ reading attitude and reading habits that can foster students’ comprehensive quality to develop all round.This research discussed the connotation of English reading literacy,explored ways to apply extracurricular reading in cultivating students’ English reading literacy in Grade One in senior high school,and tried to answer the following two questions:(1)What impact does extracurricular reading style have on students’ reading character(reading habits,reading attitude,and self-adjustment)?(2)What impact does extracurricular reading style have on students’ reading ability?The author conducted this research with two classes of Grade One in senior high school where she was as a student teacher regarded as experimental class(Class 5,51students)and control class(Class 7,52 students).In the experimental class,the author adopted a 2R,“Students Independent Reading + Teacher Instructional Reading” mode to carry out the extracurricular reading,in assistance with students completing the reading record,presenting their reading works in various ways;teacher integrating teaching strategies such as reading circles,mind map,flow chart etc.with her instruction.While in the control class,students were introduced the same extracurricular reading materials as in experimental class without demanding completing reading record,or presenting their reading works;nor teacher instructional reading was undertaken;and students read independently.During the experiment,the author collected data through experiment instruments questionnaire,reading test,and interview,and analyzed them with SPSS 26.0 to reach the conclusion that extracurricular reading style with “Students Independent Reading + Teacher Instructional Reading” mode has improved students’ reading character of reading habits,attitude,and self-adjustment;and has positive impact on the improvement of students’ reading ability.Therefore,extracurricular reading style is effective in improving students’ reading literacy.
