| The famous British writer Alexander Mc Call Smith’s series 44 Scotland Street was first published in 2005.It has completed 14 books and more books will be serialized in the newspaper The Scotsman.Love over Scotland,the third novel in the series,was once ranked No.10 in the Amazon’s Literature and Fiction category.The main characters of the novel all live in the apartments at 44 Scotland Street.They have distinct personalities and different life backgrounds.Many interesting stories have happened among them.From chapter 12 to chapter 22,the translator has rendered approximately 20,000 words.So far there is no Chinese translation of this novel.This report begins with an introduction to the source text,explains the tools used in the translation,and summarizes the key points and difficulties encountered during the translation.Under the guidance of Schema Theory,it discusses specifically how difficulties with converting schemas were caused by the differences between English and Chinese through schema overlap,schema divergence,and schema vacancy.Based on Schema Theory,the translator provides solutions to these difficulties.In cases where schemas overlap,literal translation and transliteration methods can be used to activate the schemas of target readers directly.To narrow the divergences between the English-Chinese schemas,liberal translation and annotation might be useful for adjusting target readers’ schemas.When there is no schema between English and Chinese,the translator should build the corresponding schemas to facilitate the readers’ understanding using the annotation method.Finally,the translator summarizes the whole translation process,identifies the limitations,and offers corresponding suggestions. |
