The famous British writer Alexander Mc Call Smith’s series 44 Scotland Street was first published in 2005.It has completed 14 books and more books will be serialized in the newspaper The Scotsman.Love over Scotland,the third novel in the series,was once ranked No.10 in the Amazon’s Literature and Fiction category.Main characters of the novel all live in the apartment at 44 Scotland Street.They have distinct personalities and different life backgrounds.Many interesting stories have happened among them.So far there is no Chinese translation of this novel.This paper is a report on the translation practice of Chapter 1 to 11 of Love over Scotland.Starting with the introduction of the translation material,this report analyzes the original text,introduces the tools used in the translation,sums up the key points and difficulties encountered by the translator.It specifically identifies difficulties in translating cultural references,and sums up ways of avoiding translations,and keeping the original style.Then the report briefly introduces Newmark’s text typology theory and its corresponding translation strategies that is,semantic and communicative translation.On the basis of the Newmark’s text typology theory,the report makes a case analysis which covers the following issues: firstly,in translating the cultural references,the approaches of annotation and transliteration maybe useful.Secondly,to avoid translationese,methods of omission,amplification,restructuring the original sentence order and applying four-character phrases can be used.Thirdly,to keep the original style,methods of literal translation and free translation accordingly may be adopted.In the last part,the translator summarizes the whole translation practice,points out the limitations and puts forward corresponding suggestions.
