This paper is a translation report based on the translation of the three chapters from the book Scotland-A Very Short Introduction. Scotland is one of the A Very Short Introduction series of books, which is written in plain language so that the readers can have an impression about an area or country in a short time. The book is categorized as cultural reading, where there are a large number of long, complicated but well-organized sentences, vocabularies concerning culture, geography, politics and uncommonly used coinages. By extracting and translating three chapters from the original, the translator has probed into the politics, economy and culture about Scotland. First, the author explores the material by means of text type analysis, functional equivalence, skopos theory and so on. After analysis, the author will adopt different translation strategies to solve the problems. This translation report is composed of four chapters. Chapter one is task description, including introduction to the original author and the translation material. The second chapter is a brief introduction to process description, covering preparation and translation procedure.Chapter Three is case study and it is the most important part of this report where theory combines practice. In this chapter, the author will discuss problems she comes across during translation and the corresponding translation skills she adopts. Chapter four is conclusion, where the author will talk about what she learns from this translation practice and problems she has solved.
