| This report is based on the Chinese translation of Chapter Nine and Chapter Ten of the work,Collapse of Burning Buildings: A Guide to Fireground Safety(2nd Edition)written by Vincent Dunn,former deputy chief of the Fire Department of New York.The translation follows three principles: faithfulness and accuracy,smoothness and fluency,and professionalism and standard.In this report,the author attempts to demonstrate the problems and difficulties encountered in the course of translation from three aspects of lexis,syntax and text,and further summaries some effective E-C translation strategies and methods.At the lexical level,this report discusses the translation of technical words with the method of conventionality,the translation of sub-technical words with the method of semantic transformation,and the translation of non-technical words with the methods of amplification and lexical conversion.At the syntactic level,it focuses on passive sentences with the translation method of conversion,that is,translating the English passive sentences into the Chinese passive sentences,translating the English passive sentences into the Chinese active sentences and translating the English passive sentences into the Chinese sentences without subjects;for nominalization structures,it applies the method of structural transformation;and for long sentences,it adopts the methods of linear translation,reverse translation and combined translation.At the textual level,it focuses on the translation of cohesive devices from conjunction,substitution and reference. |
