Remote interpreting has been a growing part of the language service industry, driven by technology advances and the COVID-19 pandemic.Interpreters, therefore, must adapt to online services. This report explores the interpreter competences for remote interpreting based on the author’s performance in a remote consecutive interpreting task in September 2021.It also examines how requirements for each competence in remote interpreting may differ from those in face-to-face interpreting. The report concludes with coping strategies for challenges in remote consecutive interpreting. It has been observed that remote consecutive interpreting may set higher requirements for interpreter’s linguistic competence,as compromised sound quality may undermine an interpreter’s comprehension of the source speech, demanding better listening skills.Para-linguistic requirements may be lower because of an easier access to the internet. In the interpreting skills dimension,no significant difference was identified between remote consecutive interpreting and the face-to-face mode.Physiological and psychological demands for remote consecutive interpreting may be increased due to time zone differences and an isolated work environment.Professional qualities needed in remote consecutive interpreting may include technical preparedness, familiarity with online meeting platforms, emergency handling skills, and abilities to build trust with clients without face-to-face contacts.
