| With their high flexibility and cost-effectiveness,overseas part-time graduate and doctoral programs have proven to be an ideal choice for many to pursue further education during the pandemic.English is the language of instruction in these programs which is not fully comprehensible to the students due to the jargon and professional knowledge involved despite their primary knowledge of English.As a result,the presence of an interpreter became necessary.In August 2021,as the course interpreter for a part-time DBA program of an overseas university,the author conducted interpreting for four courses in the program,including Advanced Financial Management.This practice report makes a detailed analysis of the interpretation of one of the Advanced Financial Management classes.It covers the entire process of the interpreting task,from the preparation stage up to the actual implementation of it.The author summarizes the problems likely to arise during remote class interpreting and suggests possible strategies to solve them.The report mainly focuses on four aspects.First,it summarizes the key challenges faced,i.e.,brief courseware,unfamiliar terms,long segments,and redundancy in the source language;second,it illustrates deficiencies in the interpreting such as self-corrections,pet phrases,unidiomatic expressions,loss of information,and misinterpretation;third,it examines causes of the deficiencies,i.e.,inadequate advance preparation,cognitive overload,inadequate note-taking skills,and a lack of bilingual proficiency,and finally,it reveals interpreting strategies the author applied on the site such as addition,omission,and generalization,etc.The author concludes her report with a discussion of the possible strategies for improving interpreters’ performance in the long run,in the hope of providing guidance for her future practice and references to others in the field. |
