As the Chinese thoughts and culture are making their way to the world, many economists and scholars at home and abroad have studied the relation between the ancient Chinese economic thoughts and western economics. The English versions of Chinese economic texts play an important role in the transmission of Chinese economic thoughts. Therefore, the writer selects Tan Min’s Chinese Origins of French Physiocratic Doctrines(Chapter 8 The doctrines of imp?t unique, population and property ownership)as the source text of the translation practice and the material for analysis with the purpose of producing a high-quality English version for the references of future English translation in relevant fields of economics, and enabling economic experts all around the world to recognize the value of Chinese thoughts and its effect on Quesnay’s relevant doctrines. This translation practice takes Peter Newmark’s translation theory as the theoretical foundation and as the guideline for the translation process.According to Newmark’s Text Typology, which translation method to be used is determined by the text type of the source text.A translator should adopt semantic translation when translating expressive text in order to maintain the style of the source text.In the translation of informative text,a translator should adopt communicative translation to convey the accurate information.Semantic translation lays emphasis on the accurate expression of the source text and takes account of the aesthetic value;Communicative translation requires the translator to consider the target readers’ reactions and thereby attach importance to the effects of the target text.Under the guidance of Newmark’s Text Typology, communicative translation and semantic translation, the writer of this report adopts translation techniques such as addition,omission,back-translation and paraphrase to solve the problems she encounters in the translation process. This report consists of five parts. In the first part, the writer introduces the background and significance of the practice;in the second part, the writer elaborates the specific translation steps, including the preparation before translation, the translation process and revision;in the third part, the background and contents of Newmark’s translation theory are expounded;the fourth part is the presentation of the translator’s specific translation operations and case analysis based upon the theory;in the final part, the writer concludes the whole translation practice, summarizes the experience the writer gains from the practice, and points out the deficiency existed, hoping to provide reference for future translation practice in the relevant economic fields.
