Report On English Translation Of Patent Abstract

With the continuous progress and innovation in the field of science and technology in China,numerous scientific and technological achievements have emerged and need to be protected for Chinese and international institutions.While patent applications are one of the best ways to protect them,so C-E patent translation has played a full role.The patent abstract is the essence of patent,which enables the technical personnel to quickly and clearly understand the technology involved in the patent.However,China’s research in the field of English translation of patent abstract is not systematic or comprehensive,and there are few high-level professional patent translators.Therefore,it is especially necessary to carry out a large number of practical English translations for patent abstracts,and to constantly summarize the rules and strategies,which is of great significance to the promotion of China’s scientific research achievements to the world.According to Newmark’s text typology theory,the author defines the patent abstract as a scientific and technical text with legal characteristics.In addition,Newmark proposed that different translation theories should be used for different text types--communicative translation or semantic translation.This report,which is based on the author’s translation practice,reveals the guidance of Newmark’s theory in patent abstract translation.This report is composed of four parts.The first part mainly explains the source of the translation project,and analyzes the characteristics and difficulties of patent abstract translation,and puts forward the significance of the patent abstract translation;the second part focuses on the preliminary preparation of translation project;the third part proposes three standards for translating patent abstracts into English: faithfulness and accuracy;conciseness and smoothness;formality and norm,which are put forward by the author based on the characteristics of patent abstracts.In accordance with the above three standards for the translation of patent abstracts into English,the author illustrated the translation rules with examples at levels of word and sentence,showing that translation efficiency and quality can be improved greatly in this way;the last part is the summary of this translation report as well as some limitations.
