A Report On The English Translation Of Chinese Patent Abstracts On Computer Communication

In the era of knowledge economy,the demand for patent information service is constantly increasing.In order to deliver the latest Chinese patent information to foreign countries,the workload of translation of patent documents has increased sharply and rapidly.Patent document is a very critical technical and scientific file with legal effect.The patent abstract is considered as the summary of patent specification.Thus,it is particularly crucial for translators to properly complete the translation so that the readers of the target text will have similar reactions with the readers of the original text.On the basis of the internship experience in patent translation in Zhongxin translation Co.,Ltd.,the background,purpose,task process and case analysis of patent abstract translation are discussed and illustrated in detail in this practice report.Translation of patent abstracts is conducted from the perspective of the Communicative Translation Theory in this thesis.In case study,Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory is analyzed and studied from the lexical level to the syntactic level.It is believed that in the process of translating communication patents,the function and purpose of the translation need to be fully considered,emphasis needs to be put upon the lexical and syntactic features of the text,and the appropriate translation methods are selected to apply to patent translation,such as paying special attention to compound relative adverbs,technical terms,the understanding of long and difficult sentences and logical expressions.Hopefully,the report is capable of offering some reference to patent translators and facilitating the development of patent translation in China to some extent.
