Textiles were not only a necessity of life for people from Western region to the Middle Kingdom for centuries,but also a form of currency on the Silk Road.From the Third Century onwards,there was an active trade in silk and cotton textiles from the Central Plains to the Western Regions,which went through a process of change from flourish to decadence.Scattered records of various textile products can be found in various public and private documents excavated in Turpan.This thesis examines the textile-related items in the Chinese documents excavated in Turpan,examining the lexicon of finished textile products and raw materials recorded in these documents,sorting out the relationships between their names and their reality,and exploring the economic,folkloric,artistic,social and cultural exchanges between the Turpan region and the cultural communication between East and West behind them.The paper consists of five main parts: The first part is an introduction,which outlines the general situation of the unearthed documents in Turpan,the existing results,as well as the research methods,objects,and objectives of this paper.The second part focuses on the textile terms under different classification topics,exploring their nomenclatural relationships,as well as the historical and cultural meanings behind them,and supplementing the terms not included in Chinese dictionaries.The third part examines the lexical features of textile words in the documents,and explores the development of Chinese lexical items from monophones to compound words.The fourth part is an examination of the derivatives of textile words and a categorization of the common and erroneous characters in the documents of Turpan,so as to reflect the usage of Chinese characters and the general picture in Turpan at that time.The fifth part is the conclusion,which comprehensively summarizes the interpretation of the textile words in the unearthed documents of Turpan,and the development of textile related culture on the Silk Road.The focus of this paper lies in:(1)To make an exhaustive search of the documents related to the textile-related documents of Turpan,and classify them respectively.(2)To make a detailed comparison and analysis on the semantics,the word usage,the underlying historical and cultural meanings.(3)To supplement textile words not included in Chinese dictionaries.
