After the establishment of Guizhou Province in Ming Dynasty,the practice of chorography compilation gradually entered a prosperous period.Guizhou Provincial chorography have been compiled many times by the authorities,and there are some private writings besides official ones.In 1599,Guo Zizhang,the governor of Guizhou Province,wrote Qian Ji,which is the representative of private compilation of provincial chorography.The system of this chorography is grand,the content is rich,and the meaning is clear.It is the most voluminous one of the existing Guizhou Provincial chorography in Ming Dynasty,and can be called the model of Guizhou Provincial chorography in Ming Dynasty.Guo Zizhang’s Qian Ji not only records the contents of Guizhou’s economy and politics,social culture,military system and ethnic relations in the Ming Dynasty,but also has many original ideas in category setting and data collection.However,the academic research on Qianji is not enough.At present,the research on Qianji mainly focuses on the annotation,while the academic circles have not done much discussion on its compilation characteristics,the value of literature and history and its significance in the development history of Guizhou Provincial chorography compilation.With the help of paleography,human geography and other related knowledge,combined with the way of comparative analysis and chart analysis,this paper makes an investigation and Research on Qianji to discover the uniqueness of Qianji and its status and significance in Guizhou Provincial Records of Ming Dynasty.This paper is divided into four parts: the first part combs the historical evolution of Guizhou,and studies Guo Zizhang’s life and the background of that he entered and governed Guizhou.Through a comprehensive investigation of the relationship between individuals,times and regions,this paper analyzes the historical inevitability of the completion of Qianji.The second part is a comprehensive study of Qianji,which makes a longitudinal analysis of the book from the perspectives of its completion,edition,collation,compilation characteristics,and outline of each volume to show the general situation of this book.The third part makes a horizontal comparison between Qianji and the other three provincial chorography of Ming Dynasty,and reflects the progress and innovation of Qianji in an intuitive way,and shows the gradual development of Guizhou’s chorography compilation practice in Ming Dynasty.The fourth part analyzes the documents value and the historical materials value of Qianji from the perspective of material application,and explores the practical significance of Qianji,in order to make a more comprehensive and objective evaluation of the book.
