The Influence Of Self-disclosure On Intimate Relationship

In recent years,the development of social networking has given a new carrier for self-disclosure,broadening the channels through which people can self-disclose,enabling people to disclose face-to-face while also revealing on the Internet.The effect of self-disclosure on intimacy has been confirmed by many studies,but there are few studies comparing the impact of self-disclosure on intimacy between reality and the Internet.Moreover,positive and negative self-disclosure content may also have different effects on intimate relationships under different disclosure scenarios.In addition,according to the functional model of self-disclosure,the satisfaction of relationship needs in basic psychological needs may play a mediating role between self-disclosure and intimacy.In order to solve the above problems,the following three studies have been carried out:Research one using questionnaire,Explore the relationship between reality self-disclosure,online self-disclosure,relationship needs satisfaction and intimacy.The self-disclosure index scale,online self-disclosure questionnaire,basic psychological needs satisfaction scale and actual intimacy scale were used to test 320 subjects.The results show that:(1)There is a significant positive correlation between online self-disclosure,actual self-disclosure,relationship need satisfaction and intimacy.(2)Relationship needs to satisfy the mediating role between online self-disclosure and intimacy,and between actual self-disclosure and intimacy.The second study verifies the results of study one under the experimental scenario and further discusses each variable,using 2(revealing level: high/low)× 2(revealing method: reality/network)between-subjects design.The results show that:(1)The influence of high-level self-disclosure on intimate relationships is significantly higher than that of low-level self-disclosure.(2)The influence of online self-disclosure on intimate relationships is significantly higher than that of actual self-disclosure.(3)Relationship needs satisfaction only plays a mediating role between online self-disclosure and intimacy.Study 3 uses the between-subjects design of 2(disclosure content:positive/negative)× 2(disclosure method: reality/Internet)to explore the positive and negative effects of high-level self-disclosure on intimate relationships under different disclosure methods.The results show that: in the real situation,the difference between the positive and negative effects of the disclosure content on the intimate relationship is not significant.However,in the online context,positive self-disclosure has a significantly higher impact on intimacy than negative self-disclosure.To sum up,people’s different ways of self-disclosure and the content of self-disclosure will have different effects on intimate relationships.And online self-disclosure will satisfy people’s relationship needs and produce stronger intimacy.
