As an important part of the development of China’s automobile industry, automobile export has developed rapidly in recent years. As the “Belt and Road Initiative” has been recognized and supported by more countries, there has been an increase in infrastructure construction,as well as a greater demand for trucks in the areas along the “Belt and Road Initiative”.In order to provide better services to overseas customers, more and more truck enterprises are no longer satisfied with “going out”,but want to “go in” and carry out localized services in overseas markets. The translation of truck maintenance manual plays a significant guiding role for enterprises, dealers and professional maintenance technicians, and it will directly affect the transmission of the original content and the understanding of the target readers to the original text. There are six parts in the Maintenance Manual of Truck Chassis System,in which the maintenance methods of transmission, suspension, front axle, driving axle, steering and braking systems are introduced in detail. The manual is mainly to provide maintenance guidance services for automobile dealers and professional technical maintenance personnel and it’ s language is characterized by objectivity, accuracy, simplicity and preciseness.Newmark believed that communicative translation theory focuses on readers’ understanding and acceptability, and pays more attention to the transmission of the original information from the perspective of target audience’s expression habits and ways of thinking. He believed that language has six functions, three of which are main functions, namely, information function, expression function and vocative function.Judging from the text characteristics of the translation project-Maintenance Manual of Truck Chassis System, the manual belongs to the information text, and the translation should reflect its information function.Newmark believed that communicative translation is more suitable for information texts. Therefore,Newmark’s communicative translation theory can be used to guide the English translation of the manual and solve the problems encountered in the process of translation.Combined with the characteristics of the target language, this report analyzes the vocabulary, sentence and discourse of the vehicle text.In terms of vocabulary, there are a large number of glyph associative words, successive using of verbs and terminologies in the source text.In order to adapt to the readers’ expression habits, the translation translates them into alphabetical similar words, nominalization structure and makes classified conversion to terms respectively. At the sentence level, there are a large number of active sentences,non-subject sentences, loose sentences and so on in the source text.Through converting voice, adding subject, adjusting sentence structure and adding conjunctions, the translation conforms well to the expression habits of the target readers. In terms of discourse, the translation uses hyponymys and logical conjunctions to make the translation more cohesive and coherent. This translation practice report holds that communicative translation is of great significance to the Maintenance Manual of Truck Chassis System, and broadens the scope of practical application of this theory. This paper makes the translated text of the manual more fluent, concise and in accordance with the habits and acceptability of the audience, and puts forward the translation methods and strategies used in the translation of the vehicle manual under the guidance of communicative translation theory.Due to the limitation of time, energy and translator’s ability, the acceptability of the target language readers to the translated text needs to be further studied and verified.
