A Report On C-E Translation Of X Brand M4 Automobile Maintenance (Excerpts) Under The Guidance Of Communicative Translation Theory

In recent years,China’s automobile industry has undergone a rational structural transformation,resulting in a significant increase in its international competitiveness.China’s auto exports reached 3.4 million units in 2022,a 55% increase year-on-year,surpassing Germany to become the world’s second-largest auto exporter.From January to February 2023,China’s auto exports reached 682,000 units,up 43.2% year-on-year.The industry is expected to maintain a strong growth trend in auto exports in 2023.As an essential accessory for importing and exporting automotive products,automotive maintenance manuals play an important role in conveying product repair information,enhancing technical exchanges and promoting trade cooperation,etc.Therefore,it is increasingly important to study the translation of automotive maintenance manuals.The paper is based on the X Brand M4 Automobile Maintenance,which is the latest model of the car and describes in detail how to repair the various parts of it.Guided by communicative translation theory,this paper summarizes effective translation strategies from three aspects: lexical,synthetic,and discourse.From the perspective of the lexical level,this paper primarily utilizes semantic translation to accurately convey the essence of the source text.Concerning the translation of terminology,the literal translation is employed to faithfully represent the original content.The part of speech conversion is executed in harmony with Chinese and English linguistic conventions.For the translation of pronouns,this paper primarily employs an explanation method to express the implied meaning of the source text in enhancing readers’ comprehension.In terms of the synthetic level,the translation is mainly based on communicative translation to increase the acceptance of the source text by the readers of the target language.In this paper,the active voice in the source text is changed to a passive voice that is more in line with English expression habits.In order to conform to the reader’s reading patterns,Subject-less sentences from the source text are appropriately transformed into subject-containing constructions.Moreover,phrase arrangement within sentences is appropriately adjusted,producing an effective translation that resonates with the reader’s cognitive processes.This paper creates a coherent effect on the discourse level by adding conjunctions,removing meaningless information from the source text,and combining sentences from the source text.In this way,the translation’s information transfer and communicative function are achieved.The communicative translation theory has more applicability and can better guide the translation of scientific and technical texts.Under the guidance of communicative translation theory,this paper reflects this theory’s guiding effect on scientific and technical texts by analyzing the translation problems and searching for relevant solutions with specific cases.At the same time,the translator hopes that this translation practice report can provide some reference for other people engaged in the translation of automobile maintenance manuals.
