The Grand Choir of Dong Minority, published by Zhejiang People’s Publishing House in 2009,is written by Yang Xiao in Chinese. There are six chapters in the book and its content covers several aspects of the grand choir of Dong, such as its bases, forms, characteristics, inheritance system and singing art. This report takes the first two parts of chapter one in the book as the source text, which mainly introduces the material bases and ecological backgrounds of the grand choir of Dong Minority,as well as Dong’s memories about their history and the origin of the grand choir. With Dong’s production mode and lifestyle as topic, the source text is an informative text with informativeness. It is chosen as the source text of this task as it meets the requirements of this practice for independent content and complete information. The target text needs to provide target readers with general information about Dong’s lifestyle that covers clothing, foods, residence and production mode which contains spring ploughing, autumn harvest, rice growing and fish breeding for protecting China’s intangible cultural heritage and the transmission of Dong culture. To make the target text accurate, readable and coherent, the Skopos Theory is employed to the guide this translation practice. The Skopos Theory includes three rules: the skopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule. These rules are taken to deal with difficulties in the task accordingly. For culture-loaded expressions and sentences of classical Chinese, the translator takes the skopos rule to guide to pursue the full expression of cultural connotation and the purpose of culture transmission and communication. For the translation of sentences lacking logical connectives and non-subject sentences, the coherence rule is employed to fulfill the intratextual coherence, making the target text readable and acceptable.About the translation of numerals with general references and expressions of measurement unit, the utmost faithfulness of information should be taken into account in accordance with the fidelity rule.Translation methods and techniques are also talked as the Skopos Theory holds that translation techniques shall be decided by the purpose of a translation. After the practice, the translator believes that it is applicable to apply the Skopos Theory to this task for it solves many difficulties in translating culture-loaded expressions, sentences of classical Chinese, sentences lacking logical connectives,non-subject sentences and so on.
