The Application Of Functional Equivalence Theory

In recent years,in spite of significant improvements of living standards,people are also suffering from more and more survival and work pressure,resulting in the increasing incidence of hypertension,which has increasingly become a public health issue that has aroused widespread concern.Moreover,hypertension will increase the incidence of complications and heart failure is the most common one.Therefore,it is significant to research how to prevent heart failure in hypertension.The original text comes from the fifth chapter of the medical book,Hypertension and Heart Failure--Prevention of Heart Failure.The source text is a classical medical text,in which roles of non-pharmacological treatment,blood pressure-lowering treatment and treatment of left ventricular hypertrophy in the prevention of heart failure and relative trials or meta-analysis are introduced.Text Typology defines a medical text like the original as a kind of informative text,so the most important purpose of this translation practice should be to accurately pass on information about the prevention of heart failure to readers.This is consistent with Nida’s view that“ translation is to reproduce the information of the source text in the most appropriate,natural and equivalent language,both in terms of style and meaning”.For this reason,the translation task will be conducted with Functional Equivalence Theory as the theoretical guidance.This translation report comprises following four sections: task description,pre-translation preparations,introduction to Functional Equivalence Theory,and case analysis under Functional Equivalence Theory.This report introduces the role of pre-translation preparations such as source text analysis,parallel texts,the creation of a translation project and a terminology database in this translation practice and also expounds the reasons why Functional Equivalence Theory is applicable to this translation practice.Moreover,key and difficult points in translation are summarized and relevant strategies and methods for medical translation on the basis of Functional Equivalence Theory are given in this report,such as literal translation at lexical level,conversion,sequential,restructuring and division at syntactic level and addition,omission and shifting at textual level.On the basis of Functional Equivalence Theory,this translation practice report summarizes strategies for medical translation in terms of lexical,syntactic and textual levels,with the aim of providing reference for translators in medical field.
