The English-Chinese translation practice report is based on Chapters One and Two from Politics,Policy and Higher Education in India written by Sunandan Roy Chowdhury. The book is an academic work, mainly studies higher education, higher education policy, and how politics and policy are intertwined in the development of higher education in India.According to Reiss’ s text typology theory, the translator makes it clear that the source text is an informative text, which focuses on accurately conveying information. In the report, the translator analyzes the characteristics of the original text, summarizes the translation problems and demonstrates solutions at lexical, syntactic and textual levels. At the lexical level,in order to adequately convey the message of the original text and make the target text conform to the convention of the target language, the translator adopts the methods of conversion and concretization for the abstract nouns that are widely used in the original text. The translator attempts to keep the original subjects,or translate the inanimate subjects into objects, adverbials or verb-object structures combining with some specific methods, such as addition, extension and conversion. At the textual level, the translator adopts the strategies of substitution and omission of pronouns;and for the implicit logic relations hidden within the text, the translator adds formal logical and semantic connectives for the purpose to achieving textual cohesion and coherence.By doing the translation, the translator has learned a lot of knowledge about the culture and education of India, and improved her translation ability for academic texts. It is hoped that this effort can make some contributions to other translators’ research on the translation of similar texts. |
