| This report is based on the E-C translation of the six and seven chapters of The Third Edition of American Petroleum Institute Standard 675.A Legal Text published by American Petroleum Institute in 2012.The Standard clearly explained the latest norms and criteria for the contract signature, production specifications, delivery standards and other important factors of the metering pump industry. After complete investigation of the source text, guided by Newmark Peter’s Communicative Translation Theory, the author focuses on the translation of the sentences with inanimate subjects. To fully present the objective facts of the source text while analyzing the problem of establishing the best connection between the source text and the target language readers. The translation difficulties of the sentences with inanimate subject in this text are divided into three categories:sentence in which a material process is an inanimate subject, sentence in which a nominalization structure is an inanimate subject,Sentence with an Inanimate Subject+ Animate Verb. And three corresponding translation strategies are proposed:translating the inanimate subject into the adverbial, translating the inanimate subject into the object, translating the inanimate subject sentence to the animate subject sentence.Hopefully, this translation practice can provide a certain reference for other translators in the translation of sentences with inanimate subject in similar types of texts. |
