| This is an English-Chinese translation report based on the Early Mongol Rule in Thirteenth-Century Iran whose writer is George Lane. The source text consists of 9chapters in total, and the selected part is Sections 1-2 of Chapter 4 “The Uneasy Borders”.The book mainly shows us the early Mongol rule in thirteenth-century Iran from some important historical events that occurred according to the timeline. The translation of this book can provide some references for readers to understand the history and culture of the Mongol rule systematically and comprehensively. In this translation report, the translator first briefly introduced the background of the translation practice, the author, the source text and the translation process. Then, the difficulties encountered in the process of translating and the corresponding translation techniques were analyzed with specific examples. The translation difficulties met in the translating process merely lie in the lexical aspect and the syntactic aspect. The lexical difficulties are mainly reflected in translating proper nouns and culture-loaded words. At the syntactic level, translating long sentences, attributive clauses and passive sentences has been an obstacle for the translator. Two translation techniques were adopted for proper nouns.Since the selected source text covers the history and culture of the Mongol Empire, the established translations of quite a number of proper nouns could be found. Therefore, the translator had to choose the most appropriate one among those versions rather than translated them at random. In addition, transliteration was used for proper nouns that have not been translated. When it came to translating culture-loaded words, the translator employed the technique of annotation to supplement their cultural connotations, which enables the target readers to have a better understanding of the source text. Moreover, semantic extension was also applied for the problems caused by culture-loaded words. At the syntactic level, following the original syntactic order and division were employed for translating long sentences. In terms of translating attributive clauses, preposition, postposition and reinventing sentence structure were the main techniques.Ultimately,as for passive sentences, change of voices was used to tackle the translation difficulties.Last but not least, the translation report summarizes implications and deficiencies of this translation practice. The translator has learned a lot and realized her own weaknesses through this translation practice. In the future, the translator will continue to learn and strive to promote the translation capability. |
