As the smallest unit of writing and the material basis of character, the form of stroke plays an important role in the development and evolution of the form of Chinese characters due to its different external forms, quantities and combinations. The Dunhuang bamboo slip and Han script, the habitual form of stroke of the memorial script(a type of cursive script evolved in the Han Dynasty),technique of calligraphy, the conclusion of its characteristics and evolution rules and research on its styles and its causes are able to show writing features of the frontier fortress in the Han Dynasty, compensate for the weaknesses of Dunhuang bamboo slip on font, emphasize its value in the history of Chinese character and enrich the relative theories of font.According to the analysis, the form of stroke of Dunhuang bamboo slip and Han script mainly include seven types: horizontal stroke, vertical stroke, left falling stroke, right falling stroke, dot stroke, turning stroke, hooked stroke, while memorial script according to their generality, has eight types: horizontal stroke, vertical stroke, dot stroke, turning stroke, hooked stroke, right falling stroke, left falling stroke and bow stroke.Through comparing to each type of the form of stroke and technique of calligraphy,we found that from Han script to memorial script, the trend was to be short on horizontal stroke, bent on vertical stroke, sharp on left falling stroke, smooth on right falling stroke, pausing on dot stroke, curving on turning stroke and brief on hook stroke, and gradually the idiomatic form of stroke of all techniques developed into a combination of Lou feng and Ce feng(oblique attack technique),which present an overall evolution rules and tendency of strokes being frugal, contractive, adhesive, turning and sharp. There are obvious differences between the font styles of Dunhuang bamboo slip and Han script and memorial script under the influence of their own habitual form of strok. The Han script has a stable structure, and its gravity mostly concentrates on the middle of the character with proper arrangement and flat posture;whereas memorial script has a sloping structure, and its gravity is mainly in the middle or the right side with uneven layout and casual posture.Through the comparison of their structure and posture, from Han script to memorial script, the structure turns to be scattered, and the posture tends to be casual and various, and the pursuit of a dynamic balance of Chinese characters is increasingly strong. The main reasons for the formation of the font style of Dunhuang bamboo slip include several factors, such as the internal requirements of simplification and standardization of Chinese characters, the subjective manifestation of writing behavior by calligrapher and the objective impact of writing tools and carriers.
