| The original text of the translation practice is taken from The Discourse of American Literature written by Professor Bruce Ronda, including the introduction and the first four chapters of the book. The difficulty and focus of this translation practice are that the original text is an informative text, involving cultural knowledge such as American history, literature and religion, and contains a large number of complex sentences and proper nouns. The model proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet is instructive to translation practice, hence the author takes it as the theoretical framework and applies the seven translation methods under the two translation strategies to deal with the difficulties she faces.Firstly,to restore the exoticism and grammatical structures of the source language, the author adopts borrowing and calque under direct translation to directly introduce the meaning and form of source vocabularies into the target language, and uses literal translation to reproduce the sentence structure of the source language to the greatest extent.Secondly, for some words and sentences that have been poorly translated by direct translation, the author employs transposition and modulation under oblique translation to adjust the part of speech and the sentence structure so as to seek semantic and functional equivalence.Meanwhile,in view of the cultural gap generated by different cultures, the author chooses equivalence and adaptation to change a syntagmatic nature and the source language context in order to make the translation more acceptable to target readers. In addition, explicitation and generalization, the other two translation methods included in the model, are also used by the author as a supplement to the above-mentioned methods.Through this practice, the author discovers that a complete understanding of the cultural background of both languages before translation may enable translators to overcome cultural gaps more readily. And it is suggested that translation methods should be adopted in translating complex-structural sentences for better readability of the target text. |
