| The tropics account for 39.8% of the total area of the world, with vast territory and rich in food and cash crops.Tropical agriculture is an important part of world agriculture.Nowadays, with the rapid increase of population, improving crop quality, increasing planting efficiency and developing modern agriculture are urgent issues for many countries around the world. This translation report is excerpted from chapter 5 of Peasants,Farmers and Scientists: A Chronicle of Tropical Agricultural Science in the Twentieth Century. The book is a narrative of case studies on agriculture in the East Indies,West and Central Africa in the 20 th century, with a systematic introduction to shifting farming,semi-intensive agriculture, and crop modeling. The chapter 5,Forests,Fallows and Fields, can be summarized into three aspects: 1.The climatic and geographical features of tropical regions;2.The origin, application and existing problems of farming methods;3.Expert opinions supported by data.Guided by the theory of Vinay and Darbelnet Translation Model, this report analyzes specific cases with two strategies of direct and indirect translation. The two strategies can be divided into seven techniques, which are: borrowing, calque and literal translation(direct translation);word formation, modulation, equivalence and adaptation(indirect translation).According to the characteristics of English in Agricultural Science, the author analyzes the original text from the aspects of vocabulary, sentence pattern and discourse, and selects different techniques to carry out the practice. Therefore, the main difficulties in the process are the transliteration of foreign words, the definition of technical terms, the logical connection between the preceding and the following sentences, and the understanding of the text caused by cultural differences. With the guidance of this theory, the above problems have been effectively solved. The conclusion shows that the accuracy of word translation is generally guaranteed by three skills: borrowing, calque and word formation. When translating sentences, the methods of literal translation, modulation and equivalence are generally used to achieve coherence. In text translation, the strategy of adaptation is usually used to interpret foreign culture.Through translating agricultural English into Chinese, the author realizes that the formal wording, rigorous sentence structure and careful logic can be achieved by flexibly using Vinay and Darbelnet Translation Model. The theory is practical and suitable for translation studies. |
