Based on the Vinay&Darbelnet’s translation model, this English-Chinese translation report justifies the applicability of the seven translation "procedures" of the model in the field of sociocultural texts. The report has adopted the first chapter "Rethinking the Chinese Transnational Imaginary" as the translation material from the cultural anthropological work "Global Spaces of Chinese Culture:Diasporic Chinese Communities in the United States and Germany" authored by Sylvia Van Ziegert,a second-generation Chinese-American writer. This chapter mainly demonstrates the cross-cultural strategies employed by the author in the process of pursuing the primitive identity as a "flexible citizen".Vinay&Darbelnet translation model contains two kinds of translation strategies: direct translation and indirect translation. There are seven specific subdivision techniques under these two categories. The former contains three techniques: borrowing, calque and literal translation, while the latter include: transposition, modulation, equivalence and adaptation. This paper will focus on solving the problems encountered in the application of Vinay&Darbelnet model in sociocultural translation. This report classifies the translation techniques, analyzes and summarizes the specific applications of Vinay&Darbelnet translation model to verify whether the Vinay&Darbelnet model can improve the readability of sociocultural texts so as to realize the communicative function of translation.
