| This source text of this very translation project is selected from Robert Singerman’s Jewish Translation History:A Bibliography of Bibliographies and Studies.It has thirteen chapters,tracing the history of Jewish translation from the Middle Ages to the present.The translator chose Translation and Reflection on Translation,a preface written by Gideon Toury,as the material of the translation project.As an academic text of Jewish culture,the source text contains a large number of Jewish historical and cultural information of the proper nouns(such as,names,books,newspapers and magazines,etc.)and culture-loaded words(such as,Haskalah,Hanukkah,the Diaspora)and other difficult translation points.However,many translators treat these words with transliteration,or even no translation,without considering the transmission of cultural connotation and the acceptance of readers.The translator applied communicative translation theory by Peter Newmark,and adopted transliteration and paraphrase to make their cultural meanings explicit,and tried to offer a practical way to handle proper nouns and culture-loaded words in Jewish-culture related text.Additionally,this project introduces the Hebrew revival,and reminds people of the importance of the modern Chinese to help Chinese culture go global,at the same time,let more readers understand Israel’s language,history and culture. |
