A Report On The E-C Translation Of When The Sahara Was Green (Excerpt) From The Perspective Of Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory

In recent years,issues regarding climate change,such as global warming,have received increasing attention around the world.The international community has called for more effective measures to actively address climate change.Focusing on issues on climate change,the source text of this translation report is excerpted from chapter 9 and the epilogue of the book When the Sahara Desert Was Green.The source text is a popular science text with plain and accurate language.A popular science text needs to be scientifically rigorous,but also literary and interesting to better disseminate scientific knowledge to readers.To make the translation language accurate as well as easy to understand,the author chose Newmark’s communicative translation theory as a guiding framework to explore how to accurately convey the meaning of the original text while improving the readability of the translation.The author found that by using translation techniques such as amplification,lexical conversion,rearrangement of word order,and sentence reconstruction,the translation can be faithful to the original text while conforming to the Chinese expressive habits,so as to enhance readers’ reading experience and achieve the effect of communicative translation.At the lexical level,the author mainly adopted the translation techniques of amplification and lexical conversion.At the syntactic level,rearrangement of word order and sentence reconstruction were the most commonly used translation techniques.At the textual level,the coherence and cohesion of the context were of great significance.The translator hopes that this translation practice from the perspective of communicative translation theory can provide some useful references for future translations of environmental popular science texts.
