| General English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools(2017 edition)states that the specific goal of English education in senior high schools is to cultivate and develop the students’ core literacy such as language ability,cultural awareness,quality of thinking and learning ability.However,after many years of English learning,it is difficult for some students to speak English,which obviously does not meet the requirements of English curriculum standards in high school.In order to improve students’ oral English level and to cultivate students’ oral English competence in high schools in backward areas,this paper,based on the communicative language teaching theory,investigates the current situation of oral English teaching in Lin Qi’en Middle School in Lufeng City and seeks effective solutions to solve the problems.The key issues to be addressed in this paper are as following:1.What is the attitude of teachers and students towards oral English teaching?2.What are the main problems in the teaching of oral English in this high school?3.What are the causes of these major problems?4.How do we solve these existing problems?Through questionnaire survey,classroom observation and teacher interview,this paper conducts a research on the current situation of high school oral English teaching in Lin Qi’en Middle School in Lufeng City from two aspects: teachers’ oral English teaching and students’ oral English learning.The results show that major problems exist at the national level,local government level,school level,teacher level and student level:(1)the national education evaluation system is single,the distribution of regional education resources is uneven,the development and construction of teaching materials are insufficient,the curriculum is unreasonable,and the feedback mechanism of oral English evaluation is insufficient;(2)lack of government funding,poor teaching infrastructure construction and poor salaries;(3)lack of English language environment,inadequate arrangement of English class hours and inadequate teacher training;(4)teachers’ professional quality is not high,teaching methods and strategies are dull and outdated,and classroom guidance and evaluation methods are single;(5)students’ learning motivation is not strong,interest is not strong,anxiety and fear are serious,lack of English learning strategies,English foundation is weak.The paper offers the following solutions to these problems:(1)the country needs to improve the education system and education evaluation system,make reasonable allocation of educational resources,develop new teaching materials and add professional oral teaching materials,encourage the establishment of oral English courses and professional oral English evaluation mechanism.(2)the local government should improve the construction of teaching infrastructure,improve the teaching conditions,improve the working environment of teachers,and raise the wage level.(3)the school should create a positive language environment,arrange reasonable class hours and increase teacher training.(4)teachers should strengthen their professional quality,improve their oral English level,update teaching methods,promote practical teaching strategies,increase classroom guidance,and change classroom evaluation language.(5)students should establish strong learning motivation,cultivate interest in English learning,actively participate in class,overcome anxiety and fear,change learning strategies,improve learning efficiency,consolidate English foundation,and develop listening,speaking,reading and writing in a coordinated way. |
