This report is concerned with the English-Chinese translation of the three chapters excerpted from The African Slave Trade and Its Remedy,a monograph by the British politician Thomas Fowell Buxton. No one, just as Buxton himself stated in this work, possessing any knowledge of,or anxiety on the subject of the black can fail to deplore the present state of Africa, but it is believed that figuring out how to raise Africa from the dust is more valuable than getting to know how terrible a plight Africa was faced with in those dark years. It is with this belief that the reporter decided to set aside chapters 5-7 of Part II of the book as the source text for the translation project so as to provide Chinese readers who are into African slave trade and concerned about black African people with fresh materials and new perspectives.Peter Newmark, the world-renowned translation theorist, developed his own theory focusing on the texts to be translated, categorizing them into the expressive, the informative and the vocative to begin with. The texts, once categorized, are then approached with corresponding translation methods whereby semantic translation is applied to the translation of expressive texts and communicative translation is applied to the translation of informative and vocative texts. As the chapters chosen for the translation project is largely of informative and vocative categories, communicative translation is therefore employed to guide this translation practice. The report contains five parts. The first part introduces the backgrounds and values of the project and the organization of the report. The second part reviews the translation process, covering pre-translation analyses of the source text,in-translation detection and solutions to major translation difficulties, and post-translation revision and quality control of the translated text. The third part deals with communicative translation and its application to the translation practice. The fourth part provides case studies at lexical, syntactical and rhetorical levels and explores various translation techniques. The fifth part summarizes translation experiences and limitations of the translation project.
