This report is based on the mock interpreting of Harvard Open Course Justice which is a series of social philosophy courses given by Professor Michael J.Sandel.These series courses are very popular currently, concentrating on solely one professional field and having distinctive linguistic features of class context, which is easy to analyze.Meanwhile, this practice involves a large number of philosophy terms and cultural background knowledge, which have high requirements for the interpreter’s interpreting skills and knowledge reserve in related fields. The duration of the course is about 55 minutes, mainly discussing different views of Rawls and Aristotle on moral desert and distributive justice. This report is under the guidance of Gile’s Effort Model, discussing the common linguistic features in class context, interpreting difficulties posed by some of the linguistic features and the effect of those difficulties to the interpreter’s effort allocation.According to analysis on this class interpreting practice and other studies about class interpreting, the interpreter summarizes the three most representative and influential linguistic features which are redundancy, long sentence and high presentation rate.According to Gile’s Effort Model, those three problems may pose challenges to Listening and Analysis stage,Note-taking stage,Short-term Memory stage and Production stage, and lead to a poor interpreting performance or even failure.Under the guidance of Gile’s Effort Model, the interpreter adapts Omission strategy,Segmentation strategy and Simplification strategy to tackle those problems.Through analysis, the interpreter draws a conclusion that those three interpreting strategies can not only help to save effort and release the stress of effort allocation, but also realize a concise and clear style of the target language and accord with the audiences’ language habits to achieve a better interpreting performance. At last, the interpreter also mentions the limitations of this report and gives suggestions on further studies.
