| This thesis is an English-Chinese simulated simultaneous interpreting report. The practice is based on the keynote speech, given by the President of Ireland Michael D.Higgins at the University of New South Wales in Australia. In the speech,he reviews the history, emphasizes the Irish contribution, and calls on the Australian and Irish people to remember the past and build a better future. The speech is with text, consisted of many written expressions and varied figures of speech. The report mainly includes two parts. The first one is an introduction to the Gile’s Effort Model and Comprehension Equation. This serves as the theoretical guidance for the case study in discussing the Efforts allocation of the simultaneous interpreting. The second is the case analysis and illustration based on the theory.According to the features of the task, the case study respectively discusses the interpreting techniques used and the related results presented. The segmentation improves the Listening and Analysis efficiency and saves the Effort. The amplification promotes the comprehension of the source language and the production of the target language.Conversion effectively decreases the Production Effort load. The omission helps to stress the key points and fully avoids the Efforts saturation. As for the repetition, quotation, and metaphor in the speech, they are processed by different methods, such as omission, segmentation, simplification, and generalization,as well as the paraphrase so as to remain the expressing effects of the source language. What’s more, the report also analyzes some failure cases, such as error, hesitation and information loss, which further proves the significance of effective Efforts allocation.Through this simulated simultaneous interpreting practice, the study and research on the interpreting theory have been furthered. The practice also provides the precious opportunity to improve the field interpreting abilities. In accordance with the features of the task, the interpreter should effectively allocate each Efforts and take appropriate interpreting techniques. In the future,it is necessary not only to improve the interpreting capacity, but also strengthen the study of interpreting theory which can be served as the significant theoretical guidance for the field practice. There will be a better field performance sooner or later. |
