| With the development of globalization and modernization,education plays an increasingly important role in the modern society,which has been recognized as a core competence of countries and regions.Nowadays,the communication between China and the West in advanced educational theories and ideas,education management model,and education research is increasing,which emphasizes the importance of educational discourse translation.Register theory,as one of the cores of systemic functional grammar,emphasizes the context of language by putting language,people and social context together.Meanwhile,it integrates ideational function,interpersonal function and textual function organically,that is,taking intra-linguistic and extra-linguistic meaning into consideration.Register theory has been widely applied in translation study.This report is based on the the author’s educational discourse translation practice,which contains a C-E translation of Research on Assessment of Employability of Technology Undergraduates,and a E-C translation of “Globally Connected” UTS International Plan2015-2019 as well as its supplementary materials.The report mainly consists of six parts: it briefly introduces the background and significance of it,and presents the author’s translation project and translation procedures.Then the author introduces the register theory including its historical overview and three register variables,meanwhile discusses the relationship between register variables and meta-functions of language.Next,the core part of the report embodies the exploration of how to achieve equivalence in field,tenor and mode at lexicogrammatical level in educational discourse translation: to achieve equivalence in field,the translator needs to pay close attention to lexical selection and logic structure;to achieve equivalence in tenor,the translator is supposed to sort out relationship between participants,and make the target text reserve the formality and mood system of the original text correspondently;and to achieve equivalence in mode,the translator should keep the same language form and translate rhetorical devices carefully,meanwhile pay attention to coherence.The last part of the report is the conclusion.The purpose of this report is to demonstrate the register theory of Halliday as significant guidance in educational discourse translation,and provide some references to educational discourse translation between Chinese and English. |
