In 2022,Henan and Anhui provinces decided to include the continuation task in the 2025 English college entrance examination.In practice,it is difficult for students to create a context independently in the continuation task.The current teaching methods also lack systematic linguistic theories to guide teachers’ teaching practices.According to the requirements of the General Senior High School English Curriculum Standards(Revised Edition 2020)for students’ subject core competencies and the evaluation standards of the continuation task in the college entrance examination,teachers should develop students’ ability to comprehend reading materials guided by contextual meaning.Register variables can create a suitable context for the continuation task to analyze the reading materials,and help improve students’ writing ability in the continuation task.Based on register variables,this research takes the first-grade students of a senior high school in Henan Province as the research subjects,and adopting questionnaires,teacher interviews,and sample analysis,aims to explore the following three research questions:(a)What are the students’ main problems in the continuation task?(b)How can students be instructed in the continuation task based on register variables?(c)How effective is the application of register variables in the actual teaching of the continuation task?The findings are as follows:(a)Students have problems in identifying the theme,low vocabulary accumulation and poor sentence coherence in the continuation task.(b)Register variables applied to the teaching of continuation task can give students effective guidance.Field can guide students to determine the appropriate theme by organizing the reading elements,tenor can help students to select the appropriate vocabulary by paying attention to the logic of the content of the text,and mode can guide students to deeply understand the content of the text and sublimate the theme of the continuation task.(c)With the guidance of register variables,students can identify appropriate themes,accumulate necessary vocabulary and pay attention to the logic between sentences.As a result,students’ writing ability in the continuation task is improved to a certain extent.In light of the findings,pedagogical suggestions are proposed:(a)The teaching process of the continuation task is divided into reading stage,pre-writing stage,writing stage,and evaluation stage based on register variables.The teachers arrange teaching activities in different teaching processes to help students analyze the material and complete the continuation task through the dimension of register variables.(b)Teachers integrate register variables into the teaching activities.Students analyze the reading materials through questions-answers activities,accumulate relevant vocabulary through word association activities,and deepen the themes of the text in discussion activities.These activities deepen students’ understanding and application of register variables,and eventually achieve the purpose of improving students’ comprehensive writing ability in the continuation task.
