On Translation Of Psychological Text From The Perspective Of Register Theory

Register theory is one of the most important theories of system functional linguistics,including the nature,process and the common characters of language.Put forward by Halliday,register theory elaborates on three variables,field,tenor,and mode.Among the three variables,field attempts to declare the background of communication,tenor introduces the relationship between the participants in a context,while mode refers to the form of the language,either in written form or spoken form.The three variables are the indispensable parts of the whole communication,and each of the elements can explain the cause of the communication and even give the implication of the roles that participants will play under the background.Therefore,register is a desirable linguistic theory in analyzing communication,it will make audiences better understand what the hidden intention is in a context.Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life has a cluster of psychological theories,advice and communicative cases,including dialogues,charts,and meetings with abundant text forms.Moreover,it covers complex relationships and kinships,such as interracial,family,and the cases in clinics and education.Therefore,the diversity of the elements makes this text worthy of researching and analyzing.Ruan Yinhua’s version of Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life is analyzed as a case,in this dissertation,covering the concrete examples by adopting the method of qualitative analysis based on the register theory of Halliday.This dissertation aims to enrich the translation study of nonviolent communication whereby the function of register will be fulfilled.By analyzing the three variables of register in the translation of Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life,it can be seen that the equivalence of the source and target text is achieved and the possibility of analyzing psychological text translation from the perspective of register theory is proved.It may also offer help toward the translation of psychological text for later research.
