A Report Of E-C Translation Of Global Pandemics And Epistemic Crisis In Psychology (Excerpts) Under The Guidance Of Register Theory

This is a report of English-Chinese translation of the book of academic articles Global Pandemics and Epistemic Crisis in Psychology(Excerpts).The book describes the impact of the pandemic on the discipline of psychology.The translation practice covers the first four chapters introducing the impact of the crisis on issues such as altruistic behavior,human vulnerability,learning and emancipation theory,and imagination-building ability.With complex sentence structures and abundant psychological terms,the source text,which is about the academic field,has an objective tone and a formal writing mode.The translating is therefore confronted with challenges of selection of technical terms,transmission of the original authors’ attitudes,and linguistic form transformation.To solve the difficulties in translating,the translator has chosen M.A.K.Halliday’s register theory to guide her translation practice.From the perspective of register theory,register equivalence is the key to the success of a translation.The register consists of three aspects: field,tenor,and mode,which reflect topic,participant relationship,and discourse styles respectively.The translator first makes use of the corpus to analyze the frequency of subject-specific words and length of sentences.Then,she tries to realize the equivalence of field through annotation,lexical selection in specific contexts,paraphrasing,and supplementation.Besides,she transmits the emotions and attitude of the ST authors through changes of subject and flexible treatment of modal verbs and evaluative words to achieve the equivalence of tenor.Finally,she adopts information structure adjustment and proper cohesive devices to obtain the equivalence of mode.It can be seen that the register theory is a comprehensive theoretical framework suitable for guiding the translation of academic texts,and the methods and techniques adopted in the translation process can be a reference for translating similar texts.
