A Report On The E-C Translation Of Creating The Social Venture(Excerpts)

The translation project report is an excerpt from Chapters 5 and 6 of the book entitled Creating the Social Venture published by Routledge in 2016,co-authored by Susan Coleman,a Professor of finance at the University of Hartford,US,and Dafna Kariv,a Senior Lecturer at the College of Management Academic Studies,Israel.This book has not yet been translated into Chinese.Creating the Social Venture primarily describes the connotation and characteristics of entrepreneurship,the key elements of social entrepreneurship,the management experience of social ventures,and how social ventures seek sustainable development.The source text is informative because the language is pragmatic and logical,and its primary purpose is to convey information,knowledge or ideas.In view of the characteristics of the type of the text,the translator selects some examples appearing in the source text to analyses what translation methods should be adopted in order to achieve lexical equivalence and syntactic equivalence under the guidance of Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory.At the lexical level,the translator adopts such strategies as liberal translation,amplification and conversion of word class.At the syntactic level,the translator adopts translation skills such as division and combination,word order adjustment and transformation of voice to deal with the different expression habits caused by the cultural differences between Chinese and English.This translation practice does not only introduce advanced foreign ideas and experiences to inspire domestic scholars and entrepreneurs to pay attention to social entrepreneurship,but also improves the skill of the translator to manage this type of specific text.
