With the increasingly frequent exchanges between China and other countries and regions in the world,academic exchanges have become an indispensable part of international exchanges.To promote the in-depth development of Sino-foreign academic exchanges,domestic scholars actively participate in international academic activities and dialogue with international scholars.For domestic scholars,to communicate with international scholars in Western academia,it is necessary to follow the Western methodology.Therefore,translating Western methodology and introducing it to China is of great significance for Chinese scholars to master Western methodology.The source texts of this translation practice are two classic academic journal articles on Western social science research methodology,which elaborate in detail on the Western social science research methodology and its philosophical significance and value.The source texts are typical academic texts that have their text features,and language expression is highly professional and objective.At the lexical level,there are lots of terminologies and nominal structures,which are different from Chinese verb phrases.At the syntactic level,there are many passive and complex sentences,which are different from the active voice and simple sentences in Chinese.At the discourse level,the cohesion of the source texts is close and the logic is rigorous.These textual features brought challenges to the translation practice.To solve the above problems,the author adopted the functional equivalence theory proposed by Eugene Nida and analyzed the specific problems encountered in the translation of academic texts,such as the terminology,part of speech,the voice from three levels of vocabulary,syntax,and discourse,and applied the corresponding translation strategies and methods to solve these problems.The translation is to reproduce the source text information from semantics to style in the most appropriate,natural,and equivalent language according to the functional equivalence theory(Nida,2004).Functional equivalence pursues the effect of the translation,with particular emphasis on achieving text equivalence as much as possible while transmitting text information so that the response of the target reader to the target text is consistent with the response of the source reader to the source text.Drawing on this theory,the author solved the problem of terminology translation by consulting the terminology database and related materials and combining the context to achieve the term equivalence.For the nominal structure,the author applied part-of-speech conversion to replace the nominal structure in English with verb phrases to conform to the Chinese verb structure-dominated expression.For the translation of passive sentences,the author performed voice conversion,using the active voice instead of the passive voice for translation,to achieve the dominance of the Chinese theme and achieve semantic equivalence.Meanwhile,translation techniques such as addition,and subtraction were used to achieve the most natural equivalence between the source texts and the target texts as much as possible.Subsequently,the author revised and improved the translation accordingly.According to the text features of academic journal articles,this report selected some cases,specifically analyzed the problems encountered in the process of academic text translation,and discussed in detail the translation strategies and methods to solve these problems under the guidance of functional equivalence theory,which was an attempt to guide the translation of academic texts with functional equivalence theory.The results show that the functional equivalence theory is suitable for guiding academic text translation,and can provide some strategies and methods for the translation of this text type.Furthermore,it is hoped that this report can provide some inspiration for the researchers who are committed to the translation of academic journal articles. |
