A Report On The E-C Translation Of General History Of The Caribbean Volume Ⅴ (Chapter10) From The Perspective Of The Skopos Theory

In recent years,China’s relations with Latin America and the Caribbean have become much closer,which makes it necessary to extend the research in this region.The source text is an excerpt from General History of the Caribbean Volume V,compiled by Bridget Brereton.With 18 chapters,the book presents the development history of the Caribbean in the 20 th century from the perspectives of political system,proletarian movement,regional co-operation,international relations,etc.General History of the Caribbean Volume V is a work with a deep understanding of the basic situation of the Caribbean region.It has a high academic value in international Latin America studies.The translation material is one part of my supervisor’s project.The main theme of Chapter 10 is the international relations of the Caribbean at the turn of the century.Due to the professionalism of the translation material and the lack of domestic research in this field,it seems a little difficult for the author to polish the translation.Therefore,my supervisor gives sufficient professional guidance during the whole translation process.Under the guidance of the Skopos theory,the author analyzes the original text and flexibly applies the three rules of the Skopos theory— “skopos rule”,“coherence rule” and “fidelity rule” into the translation process.Skopos theory holds that the whole translation process should revolve around the purpose of the translation and the target text should embody coherence and fidelity.This project also adopts translation methods such as semantic extension,domestication,conversion and adjusting syntactic order to achieve the expected purpose of the translation.According to the translation of General History of the Caribbean Volume V(Chapter10),the author tests the practicability and the guiding value of the Skopos theory in the academic work translation field through her own practice.In the meantime,the author also realizes the importance of the translator’s knowledge accomplishment in the translation of academic works.The author hopes that the comments and reflections from this translation practice will provide references for other translation projects.
