This thesis is a translation practice project report based on English-Chinese translation of the twelfth chapter of the book General History of the Caribbean ? edited by Australian historian B.W.Higman.The book General History of the Caribbean ? belongs to a series of "General and Regional History" carried out by UNESCO.It is an excellent historical monograph with a high academic value.This book describes extensive and profound study on the history of the Caribbean and emphasizes on how the historians have written the history of Caribbean,which is a very important research material for the Caribbean.This thesis probes into translation process with the guidance of Vermeer's Skopos Theory in conjunction with relevant translation strategies and methods.The thesis is divided into six parts.The first part introduces the project source,research significance and the structure of the thesis.The second part describes the translation process,which analyzes the source text and introduces the preparation before translation,while-translation and after-translation.The third part introduces the supporting theory of this translation practice,Skopos Theory.Three rules of Skopos Theory are Skopos Rule,Coherence Rule,and Fidelity Rule.Under the guidance of Skopos Theory,the translation strategies and methods based on the three rules of Skopos Theory are adopted in the translation.The fourth part is the case analysis.In this part,it is analyzed from lexical level,syntactical level and culture level.In lexical level,some translation methods are used,such as Free translation,Omission,Adding and Replacing;in syntactical level,Translating in the Reverse Order,Division,The Conversion between the Negative and the Affirmative and Reinventing Sentence Structures are adopted as translation strategies;in culture level,Annotation and keeping the cultural characteristics are necessary for the translation.The fifth part is the evaluation of the translated text,and the last part is the summary of the translation practice and the experience gained from the translation project.
