| With the development of regional cooperation and integration, the cooperation and exchanges between China and the Caribbean increasingly deepen, therefore,it is crucial for the Chinese people to understand the history and culture of the Caribbean. This is a translation report based on General History of the Caribbean(Volume Ⅴ).The author selects Chapter 18-the quality of life in the twentieth-century Caribbean as translation materials.Guided by Peter·Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation, the report assays how translation methods and strategies are utilized to make some lexical, syntactic and textual renderings,so as to ensure the accuracy and objectivity of the translation. In terms of lexical level, the author employs such translation methods and the principle as semantic extension, conversion of parts of speech and domestication, which make the translation be faithful to the source language and tally with the expression of the target language. When it comes to syntactic level, the author flexibly adopts disparate translation methods, such as amplification, omission, reiteration, division to deal with the short and difficult sentences, the long and complex sentences, the passive-voiced sentences and the negative sentences in the original text. With respect to the discourse level, the author mainly assays the cohesion and coherence of the original text. The author completes the translation project required by the client on time. The translation faithfully conveys the content of the original text;the version is fluent as well as natural and conforms to Chinese expressions, which can provide reference value for relevant researchers working in the Caribbean. |
