Cohesion is a general designation for grammatical and lexical means that aggregate together sentences. It is a visible linguistic phenomenon displayed on the level of surface structure.Usually, the components of a text on the level of language show a certain degree of cohesion to help the text achieve its coherence.Substitution is a more common cohesive device. It occurs both at the sentential level and at the discourse level.Substitution closely connects the sentences in the discourse to play the role of cohesion.Due to the differences between English and Chinese, how to realize textual equivalence in the translation process has always been a question to consider. In this regard,Cohesion Theory by Halliday and Hasan provides a clear idea and basis for text analysis, and plays an important guiding role in translation. As a social science text,it has strict logic, complicated structure and high academic quality. Therefore, the translator’s awareness of textual cohesion is particularly important.Based on the translation practice of The Future of War,and combining Cohesion Theory by Halliday and Hasan with Hu Zhuanglin’s Cohesion Theory, this paper aims to classify the substitution into nominal substitution, verbal substitution, and clausal substitution in the original text, and select the corresponding strategies in translation according to the characteristics and expressions of English and Chinese,so as to provide some references for future translation practice and similar text research. This paper consists of four parts. The first part describes the translation task. The second part introduces the process of translating the text. The third part is to introduce Cohesion Theory and substitution. The fourth part is the main body of this paper, focusing on the translation strategies for substitution in social science texts, such as restituting, amplification, repetition, literal translation, conversing and omission, etc. The fifth part summarizes the translation strategies adopted in the translation of social science texts and the shortcomings of this paper. |
