A Practice Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Socio-science Texts From The Perspective Of Peter Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory

The translation material is excerpted from the Introduction part of The Transnationalized Social Question,written by Thomas Faist,Professor of Transnational and Development Studies,Department of Sociology,Bielefeld University.It summarizes the increasingly severe global immigration problem under the background of globalization and the resulting political sovereignty conflicts,cultural fusion collisions,and economic ups and downs.This translation practice report discusses the application of Newmark’s communicative translation theory in the translation of social science texts from five aspects: project overview,translation process,theoretical overview,case analysis and project summary.The source language text selected for this translation practice is typical of academic text of social sciences which is characterized by scientific content,clear logic,and professional elaboration while also covers a large amount of professional knowledge such as economics,sociology,international cultural background and the frequent use of terminologies,making it difficult to comprehend due to the frequent use of long sentences and strict thinking.In view of the above-mentioned characteristics of the selected translation text,this translation practice report chooses Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory as a guide to emphasize the effect of the translation and ensure the realization of the communicative intent.In the process of translation practice,the translator analyzes the meaning of words at the lexical and syntactic level,and on this basis determines the application of specific translation strategies,such as free translation,sequential translation,and split translation.According to the linguistic characteristics of social science texts,the translator compared the source text and the target text one by one in exemplfications,analyzed the reasons for adopting corresponding translation methods and translation effects,and summarized translation techniques such as augmented translation,provincial translation,and literal translation.The conclusion of this translation practice is that Newmark’s communicative translation theory can be applied to guide the translation of academic texts in social sciences and promote the effective dissemination of source language information in the target language.
